Jesus Genealogy. This is significant because it places a Biblical contradiction at the very heart of Christianity, Jesus Christ — especially because it was prophesied that Jesus would be a descendant of David. The genealogy of Jesus differs between the Gospels according to Matthew and according to Luke.
Matthew begins at the patriarch Abraham and traces a descent through David's son King Solomon. Matthew traces Jesus' lineage through forty-two generations from Abraham to Christ. If you are going to trust your salvation to someone, you better know the credential of that person, right?
Both Matthew and Luke provide genealogies of Jesus that confirm he was a descendent of David—therefore, a legitimate Messiah.
Summary: Jesus' genealogies in Matthew and Luke are frequently dismissed as 'irreconciliable'.
Two accounts of the Genealogy of Jesus are presented in the Bible, and, despite some disagreement, they both agree that Jesus was descended from Abraham through David and was the legal son of Joseph, but the biological son of Mary by the overshadowing power of the Holy Spirit. Because Matthew's genealogy is a dynastic genealogy, it is intentionally selective. This video explains the discrepancy which is supposed to exist in the gospels respecting the genealogy of Christ.
